Music Instrument Teacher :: The Music Book

Learning an Instrument

Have you longed to start playing guitar or piano? Did you used to play the sax in high school but dropped it, only to regret it years later? It is never hard to organise lessons and let music performance fill your life again.

We are lucky, and in today's society there are thousands of talented Musicians that take time out to teach their craft.

Lesson length and frequency

Lessons can range in length. But the usual length is from 1/2 hour to 1 hour long. It all depends on what you are after. If you plan on doing a lot of practice, you might be able to handle a short lesson where the teacher might fix up a few technique problems, or suggest alternate ways of playing things; however, if you are the kind of person that doesn't get the time to practice, a longer lesson will be more beneficial, as the teacher will work with you to develop your skills.

How often you have a lesson is once again up to you. I know people that have two 1hr lessons a week, on the other hand, I have a couple students I take once every fortnight. Your teacher should be able to advise you on which combination of length and frequency is best for you.

Curriculum

There are many excellent systems designed to maximise the learning of your instrument. The 5 systems that are mentioned in The Music Book are graded in difficulty (for example, in AMEB you start in Grade 1 and progress to grade 8 and then onto the qualifications of AMUSA and LMUSA). Examinations are optional, but can be a great opportunity to both perform, and get some feedback on your playing.
